    Symptoms patients often describe

    • Sharp or dull pain that radiates into an arm, leg, or buttock
    • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in a specific dermatomal pattern
    • Pain that worsens with sitting, coughing, or bending forward
    • Imaging that shows a disc bulge, herniation, or degenerative change
    • Symptoms that haven't fully resolved despite rest and medication

Symptoms vary by patient. Always consult a qualified provider before starting a new care plan.

How we approach this at University Physical Medicine

    1

Neurological exam plus imaging review to grade severity and rule out red flags.

    2

Spinal decompression to support disc rehydration and reduce nerve irritation.

    3

Chiropractic and soft-tissue care for the surrounding structures that compensate.

    4

Specific rehab to rebuild the deep stabilizer pattern that protects the disc long-term.

    5

Coordination with surgical or pain-management consultants only when conservative care has truly plateaued.

Individual results may vary. Our providers will recommend a plan based on your evaluation.

    Questions patients ask about this

When is surgery the right call?

When there's progressive neurological loss, intractable pain over months, or red flags like cauda equina. Many disc cases respond well to conservative care — our job is to give yours a fair, time-bound trial.

Will decompression help if my MRI is normal?

If imaging is clean and we don't see disc-pattern findings on exam, decompression probably isn't the right tool. We'll be straight with you about that.
